A maker through and through

I’m currently working at Transaera in Somerville, Massachusetts as a mechanical design engineer, where we are developing energy efficient air conditioners.

Working on a small team of eight, I’ve come to love the fast moving nature of a startup, where you need to stay flexible and adapt fast depending on customer needs.

My design philosophy is that good designs are elegant and well crafted

What does it mean for design to be elegant? That is one that has just enough complexity, but not more. Simple and clean designs are the ones that are most likely to succeed, and also the most likely to scale

Good craftsmanship should speak for itself, but in an age where we are eager to race to the bottom, I aim to create work that is long lasting and respectable.

Javi Makes is what I call my quest to make… everything! Exploring new crafts, art, science, and math, has always been incredibly energizing to me, and to date I have worked on making many things from scratch, including:

Printmaking, Woodworking, Animating, Videography, Cooking, Baking, Homebrewing, Knifemaking, Conlanging, and more.

Last summer I interned at Transaera, a startup working on an energy efficient air conditioning technology with a potential of up to 30-50% in energy savings. Working in Greentown Labs, the largest green tech accelerator in North America, I gained hands-on experience designing testing apparatuses and a full AC unit, as well as building and validating their performance using temperature and humidity sensor data followed by data processing and heat transfer analyses. After graduating, I am excited to return to the team to continue working on technologies for our better future.

Nothing matches the flow I get from landing on an exciting idea, and then researching, sketching, prototyping, and finishing a new project. For me, it is the process of how things are made that energizes me.

When I’m not working on engineering projects, I also run a printmaking business selling my handmade linocut and woodcut prints. Running the shop has given me an appreciation for entrepreneurship, and sparked a deep dive into content production on social media, where I have garnered over 5 million video views to date.

In my spare time, I love to cook, bake, and learn new languages.
